Make A Little Conversation

Louis Tomlinson

Louis Tomlinson

In a 2012 interview with Celebuzz, Louis Tomlinson, discussed writing on Take Me Home, One Direction’s most recent album at the time, “{...} we always want to push for as much writing as possible [...] it’s really important for us to be part of that writing process. We hope to do more with every album.” It was clear, even in the early days of One Direction, that writing music was not only a part of his job, but a part of his job he genuinely enjoyed doing. Since then, Tomlinson has kept true to his word, adding more and more writing credits to his name with each passing year. As the band's most prolific writer with forty-four writing credits, thirty-eight of which have been recorded and released, he never ceases to amaze with his incredible talent. Through his songs, Tomlinson shines bright; reaching out to the listener to Make a Little Conversation...

Another great day writing today!! Same again tomorrow !!

After being a part of the writing process for only three of the thirteen songs for One Direction’s first album Up All Night, Louis went on to write on five of the thirteen tracks for Take Me Home, twelve of the eighteen tracks for Midnight Memories, nine of the sixteen tracks for Four, six of the thirteen tracks of Made In The A.M, and Home on the Perfect EP. Louis also has eight unreleased songs registered across BMI and ASCAP and co-wrote his current single Just Hold On, with Steve Aoki.

It’s not surprising that Louis has quite the catalogue under his belt. He’s shown time and time again that he loves the writing process. In 2014, Louis tweeted, “Getting really excited to start writing for the next record :)”, and in 2015, he shared a photo of himself and band mate Liam Payne writing with Jamie Scott, captioned, “Another great day writing today!! Same again tomorrow!!

Sharing his excitement over social media for writing is not an uncommon occurrence for Louis. Even most recently, Louis took to Twitter to share his excitement about writing for his upcoming solo album.

So, with all this writing that is happening, and Louis’ excitement for it being palpable, it leaves fans wanting to know more about Louis’ writing process. What is it like being in the studio with Louis?

Julian Bunetta has worked on a number of songs with One Direction, including hits like Best Song Ever and Drag Me Down. When speaking with Rolling Stone in late 2015, Julian described the process as “absolute chaos and wonderful […] No one goes into the place with a spreadsheet, a ruler, a compass, and a protractor to write a song.” With competitive rounds of FIFA between creative spouts, it’s an accurate description. But even though it may be a bit more of an unconventional method, it gives the songs produced an organic feel that fans can relate to and enjoy. “Whether it’s talking, writing, partying, or eating, we just have the best time and a song is bound to be written when we’re doing all those things” Julian went further on to explain. And many songs were written indeed! Many of One Direction’s hit songs, including Better Than Words and Fireproof came out of this relaxed yet productive method.

Of course, it’s not always smooth sailing with bop after bop being produced. Sometimes there’s more headbutting in the studio than actual writing. “There’s a lot of people in the room,” Julian told Rolling Stone, “everyone is very headstrong and very, very, talented, so it’s a fight, a lot of the time. Sometimes it takes days before we all agree on something.” But disagreements over lyrics or melodies means that nothing sub-par leaves the studio, and the final product is better for it. Everyone in the room knows what they want or what sounds best, and it ensures that the song created in the end is amazing. “It’s a good fight!

Still, with so many people in one room working on the tracks, certain talents and strong-suits come to the surface, with each person bringing something different to offer to the table. So, what role does Louis fall into? “Louis was always very much more for the lyrics” is how band mate Liam Payne described Louis when asked about the One Direction writing team. And Louis echoed the importance of lyrics to him when talking about writing Just Hold On with Music Choice. “Sometimes, lyrics can be overlooked a little bit, and we really wanted to have a true sentiment behind [Just Hold On],” Louis said, adding that, “I think this song lyrically is very relatable.” And both relatable and a lyrically poignant song Just Hold On is, with lyrics such as:

“Feels like you’re standing on the edge

Looking at the stars

And wishing you were them”

Just Hold On is just one example of Louis’ prowess to produce beautifully poetic and striking lyrics. From “I wish I could take you to the stars / I’d never let you fall and break your heart / And if you wanna cry and fall apart / I’ll be there to hold you” in Through the Dark to “you’ll never feel alone / I’ll make this feel like home” in Home, Louis has written a number of lyrics that have touched many and show off his immense talent for stringing words together in a way that resonates with us all.

Where does Louis draw his inspiration for his beautifully crafted lyrics? Louis told Smallzy’s radio show in Australia, “you write about your own experiences”. Louis’ ability to draw from his own life and to pen them down in such a melodious way is why so many connect with the lyrics he creates, and why evocative lyrics such as “hold on to my heart / need you to keep me from falling apart / I’ll always hold on / ‘cause you make me strong” from Strong draw such an emotional response. When we listen to the songs Louis has written on, it’s like peering in through the window of what Louis is feeling and like Louis himself knows exactly what we’re going through in our own life too.

It’s a big thing, you know? Sitting in a room and talking about your feelings, your deepest love, whenever you got your heart broken, all that kind of stuff,” is how Louis described the writing process in the film, Where We Are. Well, Louis, the honesty that comes through the words you write, and the images and emotions you can stir up with them is something to behold, we're  hope you never stop writing and that I’m counting down the days until we can hear the amazing lyrics and melodies you’ve created for your album.
